Jason Cook – HHS Head Wrestling Coach

High School:

Coach Ramos is a 2002 graduate of Valparaiso High School.  While wrestling for Valpo, Coach Cook was a state Runner-up as a freshman, State Runner-up as a Junior, and was State Champion as a Senior. Coach Cook was also the 2002 Ward E. Brown Mental Attitude recipient.

College:

Coach Cook earned a wrestling scholarship to Purdue University. While wrestling for the Boilermakers, he earned a Bachelors degree in English Secondary Education.

Career:

Coach Cook currently teaches English at Hobart High School.
Personal Life: Coach Cook  resides in Valpo with his wife Jen.

Steve Balash – HHS Assistant Wrestling Coach

High School:

Coach Balash is a graduate of Hobart High School.  As a student at Hobart High School, Coach Balash earned 3 letters in football, 2 letters in basketball, and 2 letters in track.  In addition, Coach Balash earned All-State honors in football his senior year, was named to the Indiana North All-Star Football Team, and served as team captain of the football team.  At the end of Coach Balash’s senior year at Hobart High School, he was voted “Most Athletic Senior”.

College:

Coach Balash is a graduate of Indiana University, where he attended on a football scholarship.  While playing for the Sycamores, Coach Balash earned “Freshman MVP” honors and was a 3 year starter.  Coach Balash also served as team captain of the ISU football team.  

Career:

Coach Balash has been teaching and coaching for School City of Hobart for over 40 years.  This past season marks Coach Balash’s 29th season as head wrestling coach.  In addition, Coach Balash has coached football (successfully) at every level within the Hobart Football Program, and is in the Indiana Hall of Fame as a football player, football coach, and wrestling coach.  Coach Balash is also a member of the Hobart Hall of Fame.  Coach Balash has also coached many great throwers on the Hobart High School track and field team for most of his career at Hobart.

Personal Life:

Coach Balash resides in Hobart and has been married since 1970 to his wife Jeannie.  They have two daughters; Stephanie (Balash) Osika and Heather (Balash) Overturf.


Zack Johansen– HHS Assistant Wrestling Coach / Head club coach

High School:Coach Johansen graduated from Hobart in 2011. He came to the Brickies his junior year after transferring from Lowell. Coach Johansen was a 4 year letter winner in wrestling. He wrestled 119 as a freshman, 130 as a sophomore, also as a junior, and 135 as a senior. Coach Johansen was a 2 time semi-state qualifier.

College: Coach Johansen wrestled for Calumet College of St.Joseph for 1 year before transferring to IUPUI to focus on his degree. Coach Johansen now attends college at Indiana

Personal Life: Coach Johansen resides in Hobart with his Fiance Cheyenne. He is the 4th wrestler in his family along with his Uncle, Father, and Brickie Alumni Brother, Erik Johansen.  


 Brian Wesley – HHS Assistant Wrestling Coach

High School:

Coach Wesley graduated from Lake Central High School with an Academic Honors Diploma in 2002. Coach Wesley also participated in three varsity while he was there: football, wrestling, and track. Coach Wesley was the defensive MVP, team captain, all-area, and all-state linebacker for the football team. He wrestled varsity at 189 and 215 pounds. In track Coach Wesley was the field events MVP, team captain, sectional champion, two-time state qualifier, state placer, and held the school record for the discus for ten years.

College:

Coach Wesley attended NCAA Division II St. Joseph’s College (IN) on a football and track scholarship, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education in 2007. Coach Wesley lettered in two collegiate sports while earning his degree, and finished his final year earning all-conference honors in track.

Career:

Coach Wesley was first hired at River Forest Jr./Sr. High School in 2007 teaching Physical Education and Health. During his time there Coach Wesley coached three sports: football, wrestling, and track. By the time Coach Wesley left he was the Defensive Coordinator for football, Head Wrestling, and Head Track Coach. During Coach Wesley’s time as the Head Wrestling Coach, he started a youth club, elementary wrestling, was the first coach in school history to win a conference championship, and was a GSSC Coach of the Year. In track Coach Wesley coached his team to three consecutive conference championships, was a three time GSSC Coach of the Year, and was the Post-Tribune Coach of the Year in 2012. In 2014 Coach Wesley was hired at Hobart High School and is currently teaching Physical Education and Health. Coach Wesley is also currently coaching three sports at Hobart: football, wrestling, and track.

Personal Life:

Coach Wesley currently resides in Hobart, with his wife, Fernanda, and two children, Corabella and Brian.


Josh Mehay - HMS Wrestling Head Coach

High School:

Coach Mehay graduated from Merrillville High School in 2000.  During his time at Merrillville, Coach Mehay participated in football and wrestling; earning 1st team All-Conference, 1st Team All-Area, and Academic All-State honors for football.  As a varsity wrestler at Merrillville, Coach Mehay wrestled at the 189 lb and 215 lb weight classes.  Coach Mehay served as wrestling team captain during his junior and senior seasons. Coach Mehay earned All-Conference (DAC) honors and became a state qualifier at 215 lbs during his senior wrestling season.

College:

Coach Mehay attended NCAA Division II St. Joseph’s College (IN) on a football scholarship, and graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education.  Coach Mehay was a 4 year letter winner and team captain for the St. Joseph’s College football team; earning 2nd Team All-IFA (Independent Football Alliance) honors his senior year at the offensive tackle position.  Coach Mehay also holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from American College of Education.

Career:

Coach Mehay worked at Pierce Middle School (Merrillville) from 2004-2008.  During his time at Merrillville, Coach Mehay served as a Physical Education teacher and coached freshman football, middle school wrestling, and middle school track.

Coach Mehay joined the Brickies in 2008, teaching Physical Education and Health at Hobart Middle School.  Coach Mehay is also the Head Freshman Football coach at Hobart High School.

Personal Life:

Coach Mehay currently resides in Merrillville, with his wife, Annie, and two daughters, Olivia and Lucia.

Jeff Greener – HMS Wrestling Coach

High School: 

Coach Greener is a 1980 graduate of Hobart High School.  Coach Greener wrestled for two seasons (79-80) under Caoch Gary Burkhart.

Career:

Coach Greener has been coaching wrestling for Hobart since 1984, spending most years coaching at the middle school level.  Coach Greener coached JV wrestling at Hobart High School during the 1986 season.  Professionally, Coach Greener has been an employee of the U.S. Postal Department for 30 years.

Personal Life:

Coach Greener resides in Hobart with his wife, Sheri.  The Greeners have 4 children (Luke, Lindsay, Cody, and Courtney).  Luke and Cody were both stand-out wrestlers for Hobart High School.  Coach Greener also has 6 grandchildren (Logan, Mason, Gavin, Henry, Ella, and Grace).

Alex Ramos – HHS Assistant Wrestling Coach

High School:

Coach Ramos is a 2000 graduate of Hobart High School.  While wrestling for Hobart, Coach Ramos placed fifth in the state as a sophomore, and became a two-time IHSAA State Champion during his junior and senior seasons.  In three seasons, Coach Ramos earned an overall varsity record of 122-1.

College:

Coach Ramos earned a wrestling scholarship at Purdue University and wrestled for the Boilermakers for two seasons. Graduating in 2006 with a Bachelors degree in Law and Society. In 2011 Coach Ramos earned his Masters Degree in Education from Calumet College of St. Josephs with distinction. 

Career:

Coach Ramos currently teaches Hobart High School.
Personal Life: Coach Ramos resides in Hobart and has been married since 2007 to his wife Sarah.  Coach Ramos and his wife have two children Cedric and Chloe Ramos.
